Angertal is a 15 minute drive from our apartment. In winter it's the most popular starting point for families with children due to its favourable location between the 2 main mountains of Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein. In the summer it's the starting point for many varied walks and activities.
Starting from the large car park, we walked past the ski lifts and followed the river to the Waldgasthof. This area is a hive of activity, with a big play area for kids and a 3D archery course through the woods, which is great fun. We followed the river further and found many shallow areas where we could paddle and cross to the other bank. Past the gold washing hut, we cross a bridge by the hunting lodge and the path carries on to the Gadauner Hochalmen, or forks left to continue along the valley.
We turned left and from this point on we had this spectacular valley to ourselves, meeting no other walkers (end of August). It is such a peaceful and beautiful area and offers shallow, crystal clear lakes of water.
We returned along the same route and spent some time in the lake areas before heading back to the Waldgasthof. They serve very good food here, and it's a nice place to relax a little. It's also one of our favourite winter huts (along with the neighbouring Hirschen-Hütt'n) but in winter it's advisable to reserve a table.
