Late in January this year, we decided to go to the apartment for a ski weekend. The temperature was -20, so we knew we were in for a cold start, but the skies above the fog filled valley were beautifully clear so we felt sure it would be a great day for skiing.
Our favourite run in the resort is the H1 which starts from the Hohe Scharte. At 2,300m it's the highest point on the mountain and the longest run in the Eastern Alps (10.4 km). It's also one of the the quieter, less frequented slopes.
It begins with a long gliding slope with terrific views. The slope gets more tricky as it nears the Aeroplanstadl where it is extremely steep in places and takes some nerve in icy conditions. It's a red run, but is more like a black
In the afternoon we took the gondola to the Stubnerkogel and skied over to Bad Gastein.
